Organized in September of 1967 under the leadership of Rev. Clifford Tucker, Jordan Missionary Baptist Church began its christian journey through hard and difficult times. The congrgation first met on Marcus Street in Detroit, MI. They later moved to 702 Drexel on Detroit's east side. Pastor Tucker served Jordan until his passing on March 18, 1986.
On November 23 of that year, Rev. Isiah H. McCray was called to be Jordan's second pastor. Rev. McCray and the members kept the dream and vision of a new building alive, and on April 10, 1988, ground was broken at the corner of Newport and Freud. In 1989 the Jordan Family physically moved into our current location at 703 Newport Street. On Sunday, December 15, 1996, Jordan held a Mortgage Burning Ceremony to celebrate being debt free.
Under Rev. Isiah H. McCray's leadership a food distribution was established to help needy families. Inspired by Mother Geraldine Walker, the food program now feeds about 90 families every Tuesday after the 2nd and 4th Sunday's of the month. A scholarship program was also established to assist any member of Jordan who enrolls and attends a two year or more college program. On December 31, 2010, after 24 years of service, Rev. Isiah H. McCray retired as Senior Pastor of Jordan.
On January 23rd, 2011, Rev. Lenard G. McCray was installed as Jordan's 3rd pastor. Rev. Lenard is the oldest son of Pastor Isiah McCray, and served as Jordan's Assistant Pastor from 2005 to 2010, when he was elected to become the pastor. He is married to Sis. Ivory D. McCray, who now serves as Jordan's First Lady and President of the Deaconness Board. Rev. Lenard is a graduate of Christian Bible College of Baton Rouge, LA, and holds a Master's Degree in Theology.
